Photovoltaics (PV) is the best way to transfer light into electricity. Henri Becquerel in 1839 discovered the Photovoltaic effect. Solar panels incorporate a pn junction semiconductor across which electricity is generated.
Solar cells are packaged into modules containing a number of cells in series. The module protects the cells and produces a higher voltage than a single cell.
The photovoltaic effect stayed in the laboratories until 1959 when the first silicon solar cell was made by bell labs in 1954 for the space industry.
Today solar panels are becoming more and more common on land, and new technology is being developed to remove the costly silicon component of the typical solar cell. Because of the fluctuation from the energy source, the sun, storage of energy is required. Depending on geographic region, enough storage is require for either one night, or perhaps a whole season.
